Joey (adopted Sept. 16, 2013)

Joey is enjoying his new life!!

Joey arrived at the shelter with a companion … he had been in the same home for 13 years and his friend 9 years. Joey showed fortitude even when his companion was adopted without him and still he waited. NO MORE WAITING, Joey was adopted a few weeks ago and now lives happily in a house with his adopted family and their two dogs who are compatible.

The family reports that Joey is a fairly independent boy, he loves to sit on the window sill or in the garden room looking out at the trees and listening to all the comings and goings.    Joey enjoys cuddling on laps, snuggling in the crook of an arm at bedtime, has a room of his very own with open door allowing him the freedom of choice should he wish just to rest in solitude. Joey has his “mad” moments and loves to run up and down the corridors; he certainly is very agile and more youthful than his years would suggest. Joey especially enjoys his home cooked meals especially chicken and a treat of cream!

Joey is in his “forever” home and he knows it and the family thanks UCHS for keeping him for them to love. Joey has landed on all fours and has added so much to all their lives.

Lorelei (2006 - Oct. 5, 2013)

Lorelei
(2006 - Oct. 5, 2013)
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you good folks that on Saturday, October 5, 2013 we had to put our Lorelei down due to the rapid onset of Degenerative Myelopathy. We can't believe how quickly this insidious disease took Lorelei.

On one day I was outside with her in the early morning and 7 hours later I went to take her outside again and she could not get up and walk as her right rear leg was not responding. Within 24 hours both back legs were not responding. We were giving her prescribed medication from the veterinarian but she was not responding to it. I spent the next ten days taking 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the evening cleaning her and feeding her from my hand as she would not eat from her bowl. By the end of the second week Lorelei's quality of life was not good and we had to do what was inevitable.

Lorelei was the most openly grateful dog I have owned. When you pet her, fed her, freshened her water or gave her a treat she would lick your hand to thank you. She never did anything destructive in the house or outside. She was an amazing dog and a good family member. So sad when we were hoping and planning to spend many more years with her.

Regards,

Robert, Dorota, Alex

Tiger (adopted Sept. 24, 2013)

Thank you. He is such an awesome cat. Kids are absolutely crazy about him. They even decided that Tiger is a perfect name for him and will keep it. If it wasn't for a hiccup in the MapQuest and my crazy friends I wouldn't have never drove all the way out there. Thank you for making the process easy and for holding him for me. If you want me to send you a few pictures once he is completely settled I'd be more than happy to. I have never ever met a cat like him. He sat in my lap all the way back to Toronto. Did I say thank you yet? :)

Argyle (formerly Bane) - Adopted Sept. 18, 2012

Hello,

I adopted Argyle (formerly Bane) from your shelter September 18 of last year. I wanted to send you an update on how he is doing :)

When I first adopted him, he didn't know any basic commands and was a bit...well….crazy. He was 76 lbs of INSANE and I loved every bit of it. A lot of my friends and family were worried he would be "too much dog" for me. Well, as a team, we proved them wrong.

We had a rough go at it the first few months. I was still living in a condo and commuting to work. We got two hours of outside exercise in every day, but it still wasn't enough. He was getting into a lot of trouble. I was learning all about giant rambunctious dog ownership. So, we enlisted in dog school at the Canine Academy in Moffat. Turns out, Argyle is a very fast learner and he graduated the program with high scores across the board. Exercise was still an issue though. I made the decision last winter to find tenants for my condo and I moved us to huge barn apartment on a horse farm in Fergus. This is where life changed for the better. Because Argyle mastered his recall skills and the apartment is half a kilometre from the road, he's allowed to play off leash on the property. The neighbours' dogs all come to see him on a regular basis and they have a blast (luckily, he never goes to the neighbours' houses). Around the same time, my office relocated to a farm in Aberfoyle. Life got DOUBLE good. Argyle comes to work with me every day. He has his own electric fence collar and roams the farm freely. He comes in and out as he pleases, gets walked at lunch every day and even participates in our conference calls.

Argyle is also a fantastic runner. We've always casually jogged from the beginning, but in the spring, I started to train seriously for competitive racing. Argyle is my number 1 training buddy. He has joined me on runs up to 21 KM in length and by the end, he's the one pulling me forward. In August, we raced the Highland Games 10 KM TOGETHER! There's a picture in the collage attached.

So, we had a rough start but we've learned a lot from each other and adjusted nicely. Argyle is now 10 lbs heavier (it's all muscle, the vet applauded his physique this summer), he knows his commands and then some (actually knows all his toys by name), he's a competitive runner (he he) and is as healthy as can be. He loves to snuggle on the couch once the sun goes down and his best friend is my tortoise shell, Murry.

Adopting Argyle was the best decision I ever made. I had no idea what I was in for, but we made it work with lots of love and dedication! I can't imagine life without him now. Thank you so so so very much for having faith in me as a parent and adopting him out to me. He's a poster dog for why people should adopt and we promote adoption all the time.

Best Regards,

Kathleen and Argyle

Lola (adopted August 12, 2013)

Dear Jody and gang,

Just wanted to say a gazillion thank you's for allowing Lola to join our
family. We believe she picked us as much as we picked her. She has settled
in quite nicely and we look forward to many new adventures together.

It was quite obvious that during our visits that all your staff members care
incredibly for all the animals and that does not go unnoticed!

Thanks again,

Lauren, Mike, Katey and Lola

Socks and Fritz (adopted August 16, 2013)

Hi Jody,

Sorry I've taken so long to email but I was waiting to notify you of the return of your carriers and supplies. Socks and Fritz have slowly progressed in their forever homes but they are now comfortable and safe in their new environment. Socks seems to be the leader of the two but was at first very reluctant. A jiggle of the jar of food and Socks is first to run to the food dish. Fritz will come around because he was the one that liked being handled the most at first.

Thank you for placing these two with us and for the dedication you and the shelter give to these homeless jewels. I will be returning the carriers next week sometime when I track down a suitable replacement. Keep up the good work and remember that you can save the animal world, one precious gem at a time...
