Kylie (adoption pending) and Roo

Hi Everyone,

We meant to email sooner to let you know how things are going.

Our drive home with the two dogs in the back seat together was very peaceful, Kylie sat a looked out the window most of the way like an experienced traveler. We have had a few scraps to establish the pecking order but they seem to have pretty much sorted it out. Now it's just our own live Wrestlemania pretty much all the time, hopefully the novelty of having a wrestling buddy will wear off soon!

The first picture is one I managed to snap during a brief rest, in the second one they ate playing tug of war with a green toy. For a dog who's profile says that she loves tug of war she certainly gives up easily! Roo will keep bringing the toy to Kylie and almost puts it in her mouth to get her to play. Happily we are able to walk both dogs together without too much monkey business.

Kylie seems to be relaxing a little now and is a happy dog. She has slowed down her eating to a more normal pace, and will patiently wait for Roo to finish eating before getting fed. Kylie is learning the house rules pretty quickly, and is learning her basic commands.

Kylie has some separation anxiety, and we are trying to help her to get over it. If you have any suggestions for strategies to use we are open to your advice. So far she barks and whines but does not appear to be destructive or harmful to herself. We are working on establishing her crate as a safe space for her and we give her a Kong or Nylabone to chew when we are away. I have put an old shirt in her crate with her and that seems to have helped some, a radio playing also seems to soothe her somewhat. Kylie does not seem to be afraid of thunder storms, but she doesn't really like to go out in the rain. We have also learned that she is not shy about stealing food from the table the second your back is turned, she even knows how to open containers to get at what is inside.

Roo seems to have mixed feelings about another dog in the house. She is happy for the playmate but seems to get annoyed when Kylie's barking interrupts her sleep, and peace and quiet.

Jaxon (aka Duke) - Update from his forever home

Hi Judy,

My name is Lee, although I do not think we met at the time of Jaxon's rescue, I know you worked very hard to help us get connected with him through Beth. I spoke to Beth last week but thought you might enjoy hearing first hand how he's doing now that he has had 6 weeks with us here on the horse farm he now calls his forever home. Perhaps you can share this email with Jody at the shelter.

He has received a lot of consistent guidance from the whole family including my 2 cats and is really thriving very well with his new farm dog career. He is much better at meeting new people and making friends, even with children who visit occasionally. He no longer feels threatened by the horses or a need to protect us from them and he now respects them by giving them their space. He no longer needs to be tied up outside, is allowed free unsupervised run of the farm and always responds immediately to commands given. He loves his freedom to run and work on the farm with Dennis, myself and our daughter. Very intelligent around the horses, tractor, machinery and vehicles. He is now starting to learn his property boundary with great success. I am looking forward to soon being able to take him trail riding in the conservation forest next door to us and training him to keep my horse and I safe on the trails.

He does still have issues with chewing anything he can get his teeth on if left uncrated for even a short time with no one in the house but I'm sure this will pass as he get older. He tolerates crating  well now without  crying as his little sister has a crate right beside his. He is never a problem at night and happily sleeps on the floor beside us.

I just wanted to thank you on behalf of Jaxon, in his case your efforts no doubt saved his life. I know the work you do is very hard sometimes and wanted you to know how much it is appreciated. Perhaps one day we will get a chance to meet.

Yours in thankfulness,

Lee Swallow

Finn

Sandie and Finn ... a happy ending

We were all excited to see Finn with his Mom and family visiting the Shelter last night. Sandie tells us that “Finn has been such a blessing to our family. He is so incredibly smart and happy. Finn is such a great friend to our Hopie who we rescued five years ago from the Upper Credit Humane Society.

It was great to see Finn and his family… thank you so much for this Happy Ending story.

Harrison (adopted August 11, 2013)

I am writing to update you on Harrison, the beautiful and loving orange tabby we adopted just over one week ago. Harrison has adjusted well to our home and is a perfect cat. He's playful, enjoys laps and doesn't yowl at night (so far anyway!) He is on a low cal diet and gets lots of play time everyday so hopefully will shed a few pounds.

Thank you so much to all the staff and volunteers who took such great care of this wonderful boy during his extended stay with you. We're glad he was
waiting there for us to adopt.

Jack (adopted August 20, 2013)

Hello Jody,

Here is a photo of our beautiful Jack sitting on the sill in our sun room. Jack is a very cuddly cat, has hopped on our laps for chin scratches. He and Barney are still working on their relationship, but no confrontations.

Jack has eaten, used the litter box and is quiet, except for the odd squeak. He is part of our family.

Kind regards,

Carole

Hiltz (formerly Marcus)

Hi Jody,

As you can see we finally decided on a name, which he acknowledged in a few days. He has settled right in and is keeping us busy. He has met some friends both canine and human and gets along with both very well. Hiltz is now 74lbs and for about 8 months old is pretty good.
Hope you like the photo. Thank you for Hiltz.
