Joey is enjoying his new life!!

Joey arrived at the shelter with a companion … he had been in the same home for 13 years and his friend 9 years. Joey showed fortitude even when his companion was adopted without him and still he waited. NO MORE WAITING, Joey was adopted a few weeks ago and now lives happily in a house with his adopted family and their two dogs who are compatible.

The family reports that Joey is a fairly independent boy, he loves to sit on the window sill or in the garden room looking out at the trees and listening to all the comings and goings.    Joey enjoys cuddling on laps, snuggling in the crook of an arm at bedtime, has a room of his very own with open door allowing him the freedom of choice should he wish just to rest in solitude. Joey has his “mad” moments and loves to run up and down the corridors; he certainly is very agile and more youthful than his years would suggest. Joey especially enjoys his home cooked meals especially chicken and a treat of cream!

Joey is in his “forever” home and he knows it and the family thanks UCHS for keeping him for them to love. Joey has landed on all fours and has added so much to all their lives.

Lorelei (2006 - Oct. 5, 2013)

Lorelei
(2006 - Oct. 5, 2013)
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you good folks that on Saturday, October 5, 2013 we had to put our Lorelei down due to the rapid onset of Degenerative Myelopathy. We can't believe how quickly this insidious disease took Lorelei.

On one day I was outside with her in the early morning and 7 hours later I went to take her outside again and she could not get up and walk as her right rear leg was not responding. Within 24 hours both back legs were not responding. We were giving her prescribed medication from the veterinarian but she was not responding to it. I spent the next ten days taking 1.5 hours in the morning and 1.5 hours in the evening cleaning her and feeding her from my hand as she would not eat from her bowl. By the end of the second week Lorelei's quality of life was not good and we had to do what was inevitable.

Lorelei was the most openly grateful dog I have owned. When you pet her, fed her, freshened her water or gave her a treat she would lick your hand to thank you. She never did anything destructive in the house or outside. She was an amazing dog and a good family member. So sad when we were hoping and planning to spend many more years with her.

Regards,
