Hi,

sorry it has taken so long to write! We were able to adopt Georgia (since renamed Emily) in October... We had just lost a dog to cancer and wanted to fill that hole and give a rescue dog a new home.

Emily is the absolute sweetest dog and has settled in so well.   She has bonded extremely well with our 2 other males and our 3 girls love her to bits.   (Mom and Dad do as well!)

Attached is a picture I took back in November after coming home to find that she had chewed up a fourth pair of my shoes.....   You can see she knows what she did, ears flattened right back against her head! How can anyone resist that face?    Luckily the chewing and the accidents have ceased as she has become comfortable in her new home and she is nowhere near as apprehensive as she once was.    Not sure about her past as she was so scared and submissive when we got her but over time has become very happy and confident and loves life.

We are so lucky to have her in our lives, she makes me smile every day.

Dear Jodi,

We are really enjoying our time with Rocky! He has adjusted tremendously well and is very happy in our new home. He has a lovely temperament... very calm and gets along with well with other people and animals. We have taken him for grooming twice now and he looks fantastic... we have attached some pictures for you to see how handsome he looks!

As times passes, we are getting to know him better and really appreciate his prior training... he was already housetrained and doesn't jump on people or furniture. He also responds well to our commands. Our next task is to help
him learn how to climb the
stairs, as he is still reluctant in this regard. We are also working on helping him to lose weight, as per the vet's recommendations. He will have plenty of opportunity to do so as he enjoys running freely on our 14 acre property... he just loves to eat snow! We are so grateful for the opportunity to adopt him as he adds such joy to our lives.

Sorry guys my life has been all work or dogs. Between that and moving it's taken all my time and energy. But I wanted to send you guys an update on Nero.

He's really a great kid. He is a lot more damaged than you guys thought. And he has a lot of restraint when it comes to his aggression. I still can't put my hands all over him, but we'll get there. He's calmed down a lot. But at least three times a day he'll jump when I drop something or enter the room fast. If I'm holding an object and walk up to him he'll cower and run away. He's been through some sever abuse. When I cross his comfort line he'll lung but won't bite. He doesn't want to bite. He's just so used to getting beaten that he feels the need to protect himself. I can tell you that he's always trying to please you and couldn't have done anything close to deserve such harsh
handling. A few months ago I asked the kids if they wanted to go for a walk and for the first time he got excited. I realized he previously didn't know what the word walk means. If your dog doesn't understand the word walk you've failed as a dog owner. He would pee outside but wouldn't poop. I think he was punished severely for pooping inside and doesn't want to poop in front of me for fear of punishment. It took me three days to train him to poop outside using rewards and he immediately started waiting by the door when he has to go out.

Rottie discovers blankets

Nero is the biggest snuggler I've ever met. He's grown too. I think to this date I've gotten more damage from him trying to be a lap dog than the few bites when I first got him. On that note for everyone he's ever damaged, I really don't think he meant to injure anyone. From play fighting with the kid I can tell you his mouth is full of ginsu knives. Sharpest little teeth. But he's quickly learned to have a soft mouth. If you ask me what his biggest personally trait is I would tell you it's him snuggling. If I sit down he wants to be on my lap. He loves sleeping between my legs, and I've got the bruises to prove it. He'll just curl into you. He likes to bury his head in you. The kid tries to get as close to you as he can.

This is what I wake up to every morning

When I took him in everyone knew I had a very dog aggressive dog. Worse than Roxy. It took two weeks for Raeya to accept Nero. Now they sleep together. No aggression over food or toys. They'll share. She'll snap at him when he's being a brat and bouncing off of her, but when you're not to sleep and you've got 70 lbs jumping on you I think you're allowed. And he backs off. The only issue we still have is with one of the cats. He goes after Nero and Nero just thinks they're playing. No one is damaging another and the cats are given many places to hide that the dogs can't access. Two human aggressive dogs, one is dog aggressive, and it's the cat causing the problems. I've yet to meet a dog too aggressive for me to work with, but I've met plenty of cats I truly fear.

When taking them to the park I get the biggest compliment from other dog owners. The first time a woman was playing fetch with Nero and I gave his the disclaimer of not to grab him and told her his history. She was one of the many people that have said "But he's so happy". He really is a happy dog now. No one could have changed him in a shelter environment. But in a perminant home with positive training he's a totally different dog. I'm really glad I adopted the kid.

Good Morning,

You may remember Bailey & Emma, both 10 years old at the time, who were at your facilities. I have attached the picture that you posted on your website in 2009.

I thought you might like to know that Bailey & Emma are both doing great. They have brought such love and happiness to our home. This past year we took a months vacation and drove to California via Missouri, Oklahoma, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, etc. They have both become seasoned travellers and were welcomed at all the hotels we stayed at. I have attached a picture of Bailey outside our suite at the Hilton Sedona Resort and a picture of Bailey & Emma on the Santa Monica Pier.

I have always been an advocate of pet adoptions and Bailey & Emma are just another example of what wonderful loving additions adopted dogs or cats can be.

Emma and Bailey….another bonded duo hoping for a new home. Emma and Bailey have adjusted extremely well to life at the Shelter with their “magically uplifting” personalities. Day after day they demonstrate incredible optimism even though they were recently surrendered when their owner tragically passed away. Emma is a black and white border collie and Bailey is a black retriever cross with a distinctive gray muzzle. The ladies wish no one would ask their age….females don’t like to discuss age but they whisper they have seen 10 changes of the season! They beg you not to stop reading but to know that they are in great health and physical shape, obviously they have been well looked after in their previous home.

The ladies manners are exemplary, they know their basic commands, are pleasant and good with children and cats, and tolerate most dogs. They love car rides, CAN be left at home ALONE which is a major plus! Emma and Bailey are “medium” energy dogs, easy to walk, and recently showed that their excellent manners extended to our Veterinarian while they were getting their shots and microchips.

The girls are indeed as kind in spirit as they are attractive to behold, beautiful inside and out, and it is not often we can report that our Shelter dogs affection extends to EVERYONE at the Shelter; even visiting strangers are greeted like old friends (including me)! Emma and Bailey make OUR spirits soar and prove that the canine spirit is so resilient even in grief. So if you believe “age is a state of mind” and would love to have two lovely. easy dogs that worship and adore you, look no further, the girls have to be adopted together – it would be unthinkable to break up a bond this strong and would not be in their best interests.

For sure I will bring Gord by for a visit one day when it warms up a bit. In the meantime, I am attaching a couple of pictures of him for you to enjoy. He loves to sit in an unused black leather chair in my study, so it is now "Gord's chair". His fur is now quite glossy and he is very healthy. I have to leave the light-weight leash on as he is still not happy sharing life with two male dogs, but he is less aggressive now and usually responds to my call even when he is upset. He did bite my pet-sitter recently--luckily, Thom is a pro and did not seem to be put off. Also luckily, he still had on his coat, so there were no injuries to his arm.

With me, Gord is so loving and gentle and I give him a lot of kisses and cuddles daily that he seems to soak-up. I just have to watch him a bit because sometimes odd things trigger his fear/aggression. I was brushing one of my dogs the other day and Gord suddenly jumped and nipped my hand that was holding the brush. He does not like brushing at all, even when it is happening to another dog. It reminded me of someone with PTSD--he was remembering something nasty I think.

Anyways, I will stay in touch. He is very dear to me.

This is just a little update about Gord. In some ways he is doing really well, although his aggression issues with the other male dogs are still a problem (no real problem with Gracie, my one female dog). With me alone, he is really good. He is very loving, enjoys a lot of affection, and is very accepting of whatever I want. He loves to go for a walk and is pretty easy to walk with--I enjoy it too. He does not sleep in the same room with me and the other dogs. I was worried that there would be a big dog fight over my head on the bed in the middle of the night because he wants to sleep on the bed and my dog Rocky always sleeps on the bed; Gord is particularly offended by Rocky--probably for that reason. Gord seemed to understand that this is not a good situation, so one night he just chose to sleep in the study on the couch. That has been working really well; although sometimes he wants to go upstairs with us, he is easy to redirect to the study at bedtime. He is not at all destructive in the study and seems content in the morning and happy to see me. He is still somewhat anxious about going outside unless I go out first.

The times that are a problem are when I am in the study with the other dogs and Gord suddenly gets annoyed at one of the males and runs at them growling and barking. There is often no provocation that I can see other than what Gord is thinking. I know that sounds wierd, but Gord will be lying in his leather chair apparently napping and suddenly start growling when no one has even moved. He lifts his head, finds the male dog that ticks him off (could be Rocky or Hawk) and then runs at that dog. I leave the leash on him and just quietly tell him no and firmly walk him out of the room for a while. Sometimes we do this several times per night, but it seems there is less aggressive contact now. He postures and growls, but there is less actual fighting. My dogs know I will walk him out so they do not react as much. I do plan to contact an animal behaviourist in December (have names now from my vet), but for now, everyone seems safe. I think the battle is usually about me as I do not notice any signs of fighting after a day at work. I feel most sorry for Rocky as he does not like to fight, although he can defend himself, and he whines afterwards as if to say, "Why does this keep happening?"

I really love the little guy. I will be studying more about being an alpha dog so that I am not confusing him with too much affection, but it is hard for me to walk by him without giving Gord a kiss or a cuddle, which he seems to really like. I do this with all my dogs and they come looking for it. They give kisses too.

I hope your day is going well. I will stay in touch and let you know what happens. I am sorry I missed you by a couple of minutes when I came by to officially adopt him. The man that was there behind the desk said Gord looked "so much more alive", even if he did poop on the floor. : )

Oscar and Marble

Hi Sarah

Just thought I would update you on how Oscar and Marble are doing. Both are doing very well and have fully adjusted to their new home and people. Neither needs to be crated at all now, so we will be taking apart their crate this weekend. They haven’t used it in approx 2 weeks now, not even at night. Both have adjusted very well to the Orijen kibble without any issues. Their farts no longer gag us!

Marble is quite the character and nothing slows this girl down! How funny it is to see CC back down to her. He tends to veer away from her to avoid problems. They certainly aren’t cuddle buddies like we hoped. She gets running around the apartment full speed while either playing by herself with her favourite toy (cat springs) or walks around carrying the catnip pillow (with tassels) that she got for Christmas. She also loves to play with the boys, especially Oscar who is like a bull in a china shop most days.

She loves to follow everyone around, basically anyone who shows her attention. She is also starting to find her voice, her meow sounds like a leaking tire! She certainly is an attention hog which is great. She is afraid of beds though, so we’re working on that.

When ever Marble gets excited she starts hopping around just like a running gazelle hops. There are many days where her antics have all of us laughing so hard we’re in tears. She’s just so funny to watch. Also it is quite common for her to run behind me to keep up or sit on her mat in the kitchen while I’m cooking dinner. She is very content just sitting there watching what I’m doing.

As for Oscar, like I said above, he is a bull in a china shop! That boy is just so full of energy until 2pm, when he zonks out until around 5pm for his afternoon nap. He’s also grown a lot since being here. Him and CC get along really well and seem to enjoy playing together and running around like a couple of goof balls. They are also seen napping together quite often. He too loves the cat springs, that seems to be his form of catnip.

He is my bed buddy, he loves sleeping on my bed with me. If I get up during the night, he will come with me, then goes back to bed when I do. As for his favourite human, that would be hands-down Kyle during the day. When ever Kyle is home and Oscar is awake and not playing, he can usually be found on Kyle’s lap.

Oscar loves watching cooking shows on TV. As soon as he hears one on, he stops what he is doing or even wakes up and plunks his butt in front of the TV. He’s hilarious! As soon as the cooking show is over he is off playing with CC and Marble.

Oscar also mimics CC a lot, which is funny. CC will sit up for a treat, Oscar copies. Oscar will do just about anything CC does now.. kind of like his shadow.

Both are finally starting to get used to being brushed every other day and having their nails trimmed weekly. Treats work wonders with this! Only thing we’re working on is manners, Oscar loves to get up on the table, so some days we feel like yoyos having to get up and down to take him off the table… other days he is really good about it. We have no manner issues with Marble, I guess she learns from watching Oscar getting into trouble!

So that’s about it for updates for now. I will certainly keep up dated as they grow.

Just thought you would like to see some pictures of George settling into his new home. He would never have survived outdoors as he feels the cold far more than Sophie so we have gotten him a new coat to keep him warm on walks. I just wanted to give you an update on Sierra who we adopted 3 months ago.

She is a dream girl and has really made a place in our hearts and home.

Maggie our cockapoo and Griffen our Cocker Spaniel have accepted her into

our home and tend to let her be until they feel like teasing with a game of

cat and dog! We have renamed her Hannah as she is warm, loving and tender.

Her eyes have an 'old soul' look to them and we thought Hannah just suited

her perfectly! She loves to stretch and cuddle while watching TV and is

very fond of 'food'. She was wonderful and gentle with my granddaughter who

came by this week to see our new addition. We are thrilled to have Hannah

join our family and I know she was in good hands at Upper Credit waiting for

the day we would come and take her to her forever home.

I wanted to send you a quick email to provide you with an update on William.

William is a very smart boy who knows a lot of commands. We just need to figure out what they are.

He is still showing signs of stress (not eating well and he is experiencing loose stools), but they are improving. He does not really care too much for food or treats right now...he is more interested in affection!!

He is very respectful of my husband, but has shown some concerning agrression toward me. It seems to get better day by day so we will keep working on it.

He is adjusting well to being in his crate at night and (assumably) when we are not at home.

He was great last night for Halloween and really enjoyed greeting the trick-or-treaters at the door.

He and our cat got into a tussle when they first met and the cat has not come out of the laundry room since so we also have some work to do there...but again, we need to take it one day at a time.

He is terrific on walks, heels perfectly and does not pull at all. Big progress here!!!

Shane and I attended our first obedience class on Saturday and William will attend with us this Saturday. I am excited to see how he is with other dog.

Overall we have not experienced a lot of concerns...at least no concerns that we don't think we can work through. Will is having new experiences every day. Thank you again for waiting for us!!

William has been to 2 obedience classes and is really enjoying the time with the other dogs in the class. It seems he already knows what is being taught but it is like going back for upgrading. It has been great for him...and Shane and I.

I have attached a couple of pictures of him in his new home. I think he is starting to feel more comfortable as he is starting to get into things...like any puppy would. He is still not getting along with the cat...all he does is bark at him which really makes the cat angry. We need to work with Will to teach him how to play with humans...he still gets too rough.

I have a question for you. Will is still experiencing diarrhea. He was tested for parasites...and got the all clear. He has had a course of antibiotics so the vet is thinking it might be his food. I was wondering if you experienced this with Will and if you didn't if you could tell me what he was being fed.

Any assistance you can offer would be appreciated!

To the staff of the Upper Credit Humane Society,

I adopted "Banquo" and "Consuela" from you a few weeks ago and just wanted to give you a little update on how they are doing. The two have bonded so quickly and I love watching them. I have renamed them Archie and Veronika, and I have quickly fallen in love with them both. The two often roll around and restle with eachother, and at other times I find Archie bathing Veronika and it is so incredibly sweet. They chase eachother all over and have found a place on a chair in my apartment where they like to sleep together. Veronika is very sweet and loves to play and cuddle and sleep on my head everynight haha, and Archie has really come around. He follows me from room to room and loves when I pet him. they both love the toys I have bought them, and have settled in so well. I just wanted to let you know they are doing great and I am so happy to have brought them home. I attached some pictures for you to see how they are doing. (please ignore that the last few are named Sarahs Birthday). Enjoy!!

Good Morning UCHS Team,

Well, it’s been about a month and a half since we adopted our two cats and you had asked to keep you updated. I guess the most succinct way to put it is that they are great. Two very different personalities, but the decision to get two was the absolute right choice. We often come home to a puddle of kittens cuddling. They take care of each other and keep one another active. By the same token, they get each other into trouble, but they are still in that adventurous age.

We adopted Linda (since renamed Penny) and Ashton (now named Atticus) and they seem to be at home.

Hi everyone at Upper Credit Humane Society,

We just wanted to give you a little update on Nash. He's fitting in perfectly with our family! He loves going for walks, we've been taking lots! His favorite form of fun has to be swimming! He is such a good swimmer! There's a small pond in the park that we've been to everyday and he loved it so much we've been down to the Speed River where he played for at least half an hour . While we were there, my daughter's friend lost her sandal in the river, she was very upset, so I thought I would send Nash in for it and see if he would bring it back to us. The good boy that he is jumped in and retrieved her shoe! He also loves diving and retrieving every stick in site ! Nash went to the fenced in dog park in Cambridge today and did fairly well, he had a few small altercations, but I'm sure once we go often he'll do just fine. At night time he goes in his crate, or when I've gone out for a couple minutes and he settles down right away.
Thanks so much for helping us find such a good fit for our family. Everyone is very happy he's here and my husband finally has his boy!

Hi,

Further update, she is doing great, she does trust us pretty good. There are no issues with her now as far as the home. She is smart and loves everyone. She is fitting in with the family like she has been with us for a while. The Dogs are still all adjusting, finding their places. Braun wants to play but the other two are still adjusting. She lets us know when she wants to go out and she loves to just be with us. Her only remaining issue is her fear of the car. Not sure why but then again, a lot of dogs take time to get used to them.

I will keep you updated.

I know we just picked her up this evening and it is not been a long time but I just wanted to let everyone know that although it was a little bit of a rough start getting her in the car, we made it home with no issues.

Once we were home Braun was a little nervous and we let her walk around outside for a while in the back yard to get used to her surroundings. She had a bit of an issue coming into the house but once she was in here she became very curious and actually acted more relaxed then expect. Yes she is still a bit uneasy but she is loving having people around, as well as the other dogs. We have had a few snaps at each other trying to determine who is in charge, but no one has been hurt and Braun just tries hard to get the others to play with her.

Braun loves toys and playing and tries to make sure that someone is giving her attention.

We will keep you up to date on her progress, she seems to be hesitant about the stairs and she is nervous on her walks of everything from Cars to the garbage bags on the side of the road. She seems to be very happy to be with people and is quite trusting considering she was a stray. She is very smart and I think she is going to learn things very quickly.

Hello everyone,

Thought you might like to know how Angus is doing. We adopted him back in April.

He's jogging beside the bike very well now. Just learning to use the treadmill for when the weather isn't great.

Loves his kong stuffed with biscuits (keeps him busy when we're out).

He's given up on demanding to sit on the couch with us.

Still trying to convince him that men and dogs are OK , hands are not chew toys and squirrels are not evil.

He gets quite a bit of attention for being cute and has almost reached celebrity status at the local pet store.

All in all, everyone in the family thinks he's delightful and we're so glad we have him.

1998 - July 10, 2011

Tango has been slowing down a bit as old dog's will do, but last night we felt something was wrong. Tango had a great day but by dinner he would not eat and was really slow on our walk to go see the cows in the field. By bedtime he was exhausted. We took him in to the emergency clinic, hopeful that it was something simple that could be treated but it was not meant to be. Tango as it turns out had a very aggressive cancer on either his liver or spleen that would be a mass of new blood vessels that were taking his blood and leaving it in his abdomen. He was running out of oxygen and did not have much time left. His passing was peaceful and we were thankful to have had time to say goodbye.

We knew the minute we met Tango at the Humane Society in 2007 that he was a special soul and he captured our hearts each and every day since. We of course had to teach him how to jump on the bed and ask for treats but he turned out to be a quick study. Tango was lucky enough to have two sisters, Shelby who he gets to be with again and Lexus who already misses him.

We could not have asked for a more sweet, loving, gentle but also funny and energetic friend. Dinnertime is already not the same without his crazy howling and dancing. We are really glad he found us. He will really be missed!

Thank you very much for giving us the opportunity to adopt “ Remy”

Just thought we would let you know how Remy is doing!!!

Great! He slept right the the first night we brought him home and seems to like his bed, when he is worn out from touring the farm he just goes into his room( the olde dining room) and goes to his bed.

Most of the time he just sleeps across my feet in the front room. Since we had 4 adopted greyhounds in the past he has a wide assortment of doggie beds so we strategically placed them in various rooms where I spend time.

He is adjusting well and everyone he meets really likes him. He is my constant companion around the farm and everywhere in the house. He has already grown a bit about 5 more pounds.

Went and got his heartworm and Advantage on Friday where he did excellent at the clinic. The vet techs and the Vet really liked him.

We have already started obedience training which he is doing very well at.

I am attaching a few pictures hopefully they get thru.

Sorry we couldn't make it to the event in Georgetown? raking leaves a priority but the up-date on Hunter/Norman is only good news: I think I told you he had five teeth removed by Dr. John, plus a groomer from Caledon East came in and gave Norman a baldo shave while he was under sedation.
All in all for a month we couldn't be more pleased with him. We think he is pretty smart, his behaviour has greatly improved - the occasional set back but really nothing to speak of considering he is learning the rules but the best news is that I was painting some baseboards the other day and he was having none of it - kept leaning up against the wall and trying to take the paint brush out of my hand - mouthing my hand gentler than any dog I have ever had?????

We have had him off of the lead several times, he loves our cats and will not be left outside on a lead without one of us in his line of vision. He travels well in the car and has even gone visiting. He walks on the side roads and sits (mostly) when asked to. All in all we are grateful to have him, (if he barks at people and nips of the occasion that seems! to be no more than most dogs in this village do). We’ve heard him bark, three times (never on our walks) – our two other dogs were leading the pack on the barking, not Max. He seems to be settling in well... though not eating a whole lot. He is as sweet as you all said he was. He never barks when we walk in the house and is incredibly well mannered. He seems to be fitting well with our two small dogs, Bernie the Jack and Charlie the Chug. No aggression whatsoever to date. But we know it’s still the honeymoon phase, so as we’ve been advised by Andrea we will keep them apart during the day for a few weeks, as they adjust to each other’s little quirks.
Ashley: though I wasn’t crazy about waiting a week to bring Max home, your good advice gave us the opportunity to assess the decision we had made and really prepare for his arrival. Plus the anticipation made the week very exciting.

I wanted to email you and tell you how great Dougie is doing. After arriving at home last evening and sniffing around for a couple of minutes it was like Dougie had lived here since birth and he had been ours his whole life.

He doesn't seem at all like the timid puppy we met just hours before. Immediately he was running around and jumping all over us on the couch. After a little play time he nestled between us and watched some TV. The only

thing he had a problem with were the stairs to the upstairs, he doesn't seem to like them. I'm sure he will get used to them though.

We carried him upstairs to for bedtime and after making his bed up he went to sleep and didn't stir until we woke this morning. Today he has been enjoying his backyard and following me around the house. I'm sure there is lots that i've missed but he is doing great.

Just writing to say that Claudio has settled in extremely well.

He has a push-button purr, is coming to grips with the dog (sometimes literally), and is at this moment helping me type the email. Apparently, blocking the computer screen and stealing the mouse is a great way to help in the office.

When bored or lost, he'll call out to us to see who replies. Then he'll come trotting over to see who responded. Claudio and my husband have put their original meeting behind them, and it's common to see Claudio curled up on Walter's lap now.
We're so happy that everyone else left him for us to have - they really missed a treasure!

Clancy ( formerly Shaggy)

Just one look at Shaggy (as he was called at that time) made your heart bleed, who on earth was going to adopt this dear boy - hearts saddened just looking at him. The answer to this question came fairly swiftly and suddenly when one of our dedicated dog walkers saw him, felt the pulse of that dear heart, and after consultation with her family and input from the resident canine Tess, decided that Shaggy had a new home.

Would the meeting between Shaggy and Tess go well.....yes it did .....so soon, very soon, Shaggy became Clancy and the much loved new family member of the household. Dr. John of Caledon found that Clancy had hypothyroidism and eight month's later a diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome was also made. Thank goodness Clancy was absolutely positively "home" because these medical conditions require lifetime meds for both, but this in no way daunted his new family and he has been with them now for just over 2.5 years. It seems that poor Clancy looked much worse than the first photo for a while: less hair all over, awful scabby skin, and the tail was just a stick with half a dozen white hairs on the tip.

Looking at the picture of Clancy today, and knowing the wonderful life he has had since adoption, and the love he has given and received, we are so happy that we can print this success story of a wonderful but challenged canine who has showed fortitude throughout the ordeal of abandonment, physical discomfort exacerbated by Shelter stress, Vet visits, proddings and diagnosis all now things of the past as he struts his stuff proudly on "his" rural property with his canine friend Tess.

Once again we have proved that love, companionship and the right home and family can make a canine go from "neglected" to positively blooming which we can all see as Clancy proudly posed so all can see the handsome dog he has become.

Clancy thanks his family for the wonderful years he has had with them and looks forward to many more and now his "tail" is so bushy, he feels it is time his "tale" was told.

We've been in our new home for four weeks now, and have decided to stay. Our new people are very kind and patient with us.
Summa has been renamed Samson (but they call him Sammy). He feels very much at home and eats everything that's left in the bowls. If he keeps on like that he'll be a fat pascha in a few years. They call me Koki and sometimes Coconut - when I'm being especially nutty - but they do know that I'm Kokanee.

I had a few problems at first, but it's improving very fast now. First I hid in the basement ceiling beside a vent. It must have looked like I was stuck, because they got me out of there and closed the entrance. Then I had to bite the big guy who caught me (at that moment the resident cat walked into the room, and I really panicked) and found a new spot with more room. They decided to leave me after that and put food and water in a convenient and high place. Now I stay there only during the day when I want to sleep in peace.

Sammy and I explored the new place at night when everything was quiet, but the resident cat didn't like that and kept hissing and growling. Our new woman would wake up and sit with us a while - she has a nice warm lap. Now I go up at night and jump unto her bed, it's nice and cosy and the night air comes through the open window. After a week Sammy lived more upstairs than in the basement, he's taken over up there now. I go up quite often now too, but I'm still very careful to keep distance between me and that big human! However, he plays with us and gives us treats, so he's probably a very nice person - just so big and strong.

The house is much larger than the shelter, and we get plenty of exercise running from one end to the other and jumping unto the window sills. We can watch everything that happens outside and if it's not too hot outside the windows are open and we can sniff and hear everything through the screens.

I hope Muskoka finds a good home soon too. Perhaps the article in last week's "Independent" will help - but by the way, I think the photo is of me, not of Muskoka; we're not that identical, are we? Check that . . .

Charlie our new baby …

Charlie came into our lives in April of 2010.

My husband stated casually that we should look at expanding our pets with the addition of a dog . I have never had a dog before and was a bit hesitant but started looking at the various Humane societies. Not knowing anything about dogs but just looking to see if one caught our attention. I came across the website for the Upper Credit Humane society and saw a lab mix and before I knew it we were there the next day.

As you can tell by the picture he is not the one that we bonded with.

We looked in the kennels and there was Charlie, we all fell in love with him .

There were some hard times of adjustments not only for us but for him but he was so worth it .

He is such a great addition to our family . He has gone camping and on fishing trips to Kirkland Lake with us and absolutely loves the outdoors . He goes to Doggy daycare during the day, loves the dog run and is spoiled along with the other two cats he shares the house with. He is so gentle and loving with my 5 year old daughter and anyone else who visits.

We love Charlie and could not imagine our lives with out him.

I want to Thank everyone for helping us .Charlie is our darling ..

It has been almost a year since we adopted Kane. He was a real enigma and it took a while but he has adjusted well. Although he does have a stubborn husky streak that he tends to display when he feels like it, especially at dog obedience classes :) Kane loves our daily walks through the park and playing outdoors with us. He also has his own special places in the house. This Christmas he took over the spot by the Christmas tree and made it his own (see picture attached). He follows our 2 year old grandson everywhere and is his best friend.

WHICKEN, MAX AND MIA SAY 'MERRY CHRISTMAS'!

Whicken's Christmas Wish was to find a home of her own after TWO YEARS at the Shelter. Dumped in a box with her sister on December 24th 2008 Whicken had never known anything else but Shelter life....and became quieter and more reclusive until our new plea for a home for Christmas was heard and Whicken went home at the beginning of December to her very first family Christmas with everyone so very happy for her and her new family. It gave us all a boost!

THEN....A DOUBLE BOOST...MAX AND MIA
Max and Mia came to us in May and this delightful brother and sister German
Shepherd duo spent almost seven months with us at UCHS. At 7+ years of age
and hoping to be adopted together, two articles were written about their
need for a home. As a final thrust a new article was written about how well
they had endured life at the Shelter and suddenly a Christmas miracle
happened when an adoptive family answered their call. On Friday, December
17th, to the absolute happiness of everyone connected to UCHS, Staff,
volunteers, and the public who asked about them, Max and Mia left the
Shelter in the company of their new "Mum and Dad"tails held high and
wagging!.

We are without question always happy whenever one of our residents gets a
new chance at a happy life, but Whicken, Max and Mia with their special
circumstances and sweet, serene natures being adopted during this Season
gave a new meaning to why everyone who is connected with the Upper Credit
Humane Society does what they do.

Hi Karen and staff at Upper Credit

Just a quick note to let you know that Max & Mia are doing great, and really settling into their new home and new routines! They are both very relaxed and happy, and are losing some of the dominance & dependence issues, and just relaxing being dogs!! J They enjoy their walks mostly twice a day, and Hans goes much further, running and walking with Max so he is very much enjoying that! Mia enjoys her walks too, she gets out twice a day, and we do a good little jaunt together. She is becoming more outgoing, and more interested in toys and treats, etc.

We are working on helping Mia lose some weight and become more active, and the vet said it would be helpful to know what her weight was when she came into the shelter, and what it was when we adopted them. Would you be able to look in their file for that information for me?

I haven’t got pictures to you yet, but I will. We are very much enjoying them – they are such lovely dogs, and a great addition to our family!

Hello all at the Erin Humane Society! Just a quick update on Buddy and Thank You! As you can see this is Buddy chilling on his bed, though I’m positive he sneaks onto the furniture when our backs are turned J He has been a wonderful addition to our family and seems to love everyone he meets, with the exception of my cat Echo – they are still trying to decide who’s in charge.

He is a pleasure to go on long walks with and is a great jogging buddy which is getting me ready for summer bikini season. He loves games of ball, tug of war and Frisbee catching whether he\s invited into the game or not. The food aggression issue seems to not be present, so we are very excited about that. We did attempt to crate train him, but decided his name should be Houdini as it seemed nothing we could to would restrain him. So today was his first day having the roam of the house and he was a good boy!

Anyways, we would like to thank all at the Erin Humane Society with a special thanks to Karen for pointing Buddy out as a good fit for us. Good luck in your continuing hard work of re-homing wonderful pups like Buddy.

We adopted Aggie two weeks ago today. So far she has destroyed our futon, put holes all over our leather furniture and she also steals crackers. Lucky she's so darned adorable! Truthfully, we knew she would have some adjustment issues and we're not overly concerned about her little transgressions. Our pet cockatiel is still alive, but she paid waaay too much attention to his existence at first. It did take only a couple of short spritz's of the water bottle to remind her that he was here first and is now her housemate. Aggie has settled in very well and our other cat Joey has easily accepted her presence (he did growl and hiss a bit at first). The first day or so, she hid in the basement off and on and actually was briefly stuck behind the freezer. If you saw her now you would think she was born here. Aggie has an adorable little squeaky meow that gets her whatever she wants and all three of us love her dearly. Attached are a couple of pictures of Joey and Aggie and it should be noted that they squeezed themselves onto a little blanket together when they could have stretched out on the rest of the bed. Yes, they both sleep on the bed with us at night.

I couldn't resist starting out the message with her little demolition streak but it has a happy ending which is what we all wanted.

We just wanted to let you all know that Cinderella, now known as "Popcorn" has settled in perfectly! Our daughter Paisley was so excited to get the wee darling for her birthday and is completey smitten with her. Popcorn has made herself right at home and seems quite happy in her new family. I think she is the perfect little cat for us. She's quiet, yet playful, and very mild mannered. Our other cat Chloe is still adjusting but it is getting better bit by bit. The only question I have about our new family member is that she seems to be having some diarrhea. She is eating fine, drinking plenty, and using her litter box. I'm guessing this is just Popcorn's way of adjusting since otherwise she seems fine, but I thought I'd check...

Crissy is getting along marvelously with our 2 dogs Kanga (lab) and Alvin (rotti x hound), and would probably like to get to know our 2 cats a little better, but they are busy with outdoor activities these days, and only come around when it's dinner time. We do believe that the socialization skills learned when she lived in the "cat room" helped her transition into a multi-pet family quite nicely.

Her favourite activities so far are: watching birds from the windows, playing with Kanga's tail, sleeping next to Alvin and generally playing with anything that she can get to move. She especially likes the mat at the back door which allows her to roll up in and then pounce at the dogs' legs.

We will send you another update as her personality develops even more !!!

"Paisley" is doing fine. When I let her out of the crate on Tuesday, she wandered all over the house investigating everything. Right now she is fast asleep on my bed. She is eating well. I went to Home Sense and got her a nice new cat bed and pretty dishes. I am now a geriatric cat nurse. She is lovely, happy and looks liked she died and gone to heaven. She has a nice loud purr when I brush her. When she is awake, she follows me all over the house like a dog. I made the right decision to provide a nice peaceful home for her.

Hi Karen and staff...

I just though I would update you on how Phil is doing.

He iis already getting spoiled and is the king of the house for sure. He has our dog petrified of him, he stoood up on his hind legs and boxed the dog into submission on their first meeting and now the dog gives him a wide bearth. He gets to sleep in dad's bed and watches intently out any window he can jump into. He rides great in the van and seems to enjoy going out to our trailer for weekends.

He is a perfect match with our family and I think we certainly picked the right guy. He has his own personality and is very determined that when he wants petted you will do it no matter what time of day or night it is.

Thanks for all of your help in Phil's adoption.

Hi - just wanted to let you know that O'Malley, formerly Warren, (adopted this May) is doing well. He is curiosity on wheels, and is a busy, busy boy. When I first brought him home, I expected that he would want to hide for a while, as cats I've adopted in the past have done. Not O'Malley - he lept out of his carrier as soon as I opened the door, ran around the room with unbridled excitement, and a minute later, wanted out of his 'quiet room'. He was taken aback at first by my equally boisterous German Shepherd, Gracie, but soon recovered his poise, and swaggered past her. Nothing stops O'Malley from going where he wants to go, and doing what he wants to do. He's had a very busy summer, racing from window to window, upstairs and downstairs, watching the birds and squirrels!

Thanks to the staff and volunteers at UCHS for taking so much time with me, in choosing a cat with just the right kind of temperment to fit in; you couldn't have done better. Many cats wouldn't have the confidence and aplomb to take on living with Gracie - but O'Malley takes her all in stride, and happily goes about his busy day. He is also one of the most affectionate cats I've had, and welcomes everyone with purrs and demands for tummy rubs.

He’s an absolutely wonderful and affectionate cat!!! He quickly adjusted to his new kitty house mate, my senior cat Kara, and my dog, who’s done nothing more than sniff him a few of times. I am so glad that I dropped in that day and that he picked me lol. Thank you all for the time you spent during the adoption process so that I was able to take him home right away.

Hi there,

We just wanted to let you know Willa, we have renamed her, is doing terrific. She has exceeded our expectations. She loves that we have girl's that run with her and curl up with her. She loves our big back yard walking around getting used to the different smells and sounds. She loved the farm, enjoying her long walk around the property yesterday. My in-laws loved her too and she played with their dog Ruby. Our 11 yr old Mandy is still adjusting to this little friend we brought home but is letting her get closer and closer. There will be lots of pack walks:) That will help.

Thank you so much for caring for her and allowing us to take her into our family. She is eating well and has not had any accidents in the house. A little shy still, but to be expected. We are taking it really slow. She seems quite comfortable with us and stays close by.

Barn kittens - Thanks!

Earlier this year my barn was "adopted" by a very sweet friendly cat. Before I had a chance to spay her she produced 6 beautiful, healthy kittens. These kittens were kept in the barn office so they were well socialized, litter trained etc. and had the best chance of becoming loving family pets but I needed help finding them good homes. By chance we were in Pet Value buying food for our house cats and talked to the young man working there. He gave me Barb( the kitten lady's) phone number. One call to Barb and the next day Barb brought Frances, the foster lady to meet and check the kittens and give Mama her shots.

A few weeks after the kittens were fostered and Sylvie spayed ( I adopted her). I was asked if my barn could accommodate a neutered male cat that had not done well as an indoor cat so Stanley came to live in the barn. He was not happy indoors and needed his space so I agreed to take him on trial. He's with me to stay now.

At first Sylvie tormented poor Stanley but now they are best friends. There is still some competitions for lap time but the two are seldom seen apart. When I go to do chores, I am met by two black sentries who escort me around and make sure I'm doing things right. When pickers came to the farm these cats took the opportunity to get extra cuddles.

Now barn life may not be a perfect life but these cats love it. The barn is 200 ft long, they have their own room, a cat door so they are safe from predators, soft wooly sheep they can curl up on. a heated crate, parasite control etc. Everything a cat could want. They spend most of their time patrolling the barn, checking the lambs and inspecting the chickens. These two are the welcome committee for any visitors and get lots of cuddles and lap time. They also get to be hunters. They accept our working Border Collies but stay away well away from other dogs and have even learned to stay in the fenced area unless out with me. It is not unusual for them to escort me and the sheep to pasture and sit with me while the sheep graze. What a life!!!!

The best rodent control in any barn is a neutered cat. Kittens can spread disease but seldom do fixed adults. They are loving, loved and cherished, at least these two are.

Many thanks to the wonderful staff and volunteer network at the UCHS. They recognized the needs of these cats and have made the best arrangements for them and I am the lucky recipient of their knowledge. Many thanks. Lene Band

Hi Andria and the rest of the staff.

Seth is doing great! He is fitting in well and everyday just gets better as he bonds with Roxie and the rest of us.
He does well at the dog park playing with all the other dogs. He gets along with my friends two dogs where they run free in a large field.
Roxie play fights with him and they are getting along very well. In the large field Seth is now reached some unbelieveable speed where as of today he keeps up with Roxie. His Stamina is not the same however improving. In the next week I will not be surprised he is faster than her. Not too many dogs are faster than her. You really could not see how fast Seth was until u took him to a large open field.

They are both walked together in the morning by my kids, my wife works in town and comes home for lunch. She is off one day a week and starts at noon one day a week also. In the evening im at the dog park or large fields with them. Im home by 3PM.

There lots of fun and comical. Seth sleeps on her large pillow and Roxies sleeps in his small oval bed with her head hanging off and her feet.

Things will continue to get better as with Roxie it seemed that 1 to 2 month period they really realize there here to stay.

Im just touching base with couple news about Peaches who's name is Mili now (hope she doesn't mind).
First day was quiet, she didn't eat much, just watching and listening. Things changed since then, to our delight. She is running, jumping enjoying her freedom. Started to eat grass and more hay as well as other greens. Mili is getting accustom to going out on the patio and back to the living room, exploring everything carefully. She has such a sweet and calm predisposition. Mili doesn't give away kissess yet, nor she made any friends with the guys, but I'm trilled with her. Everybody is trying to make her happy and comfortable, except my other bunnies who are jelous. When time comes we'll work on bonding her with our younger bunny Lewie (the opal in colour).

We just wanted to send an email to let you know that Mimosa (now named Minnie) has adjusted extremely well to her new home. We brought her home and followed the instructions to place her in a room and were prepared to have her hide for the first little while. Forget that! She came out of her carrier ready to cuddle and play and desperately wanted to explore the entire house. Within 2 hours of arrival she was running around having a great time in her new home. We have bought her a cat tree and she just loves to nap in it as you can see from the picture. Minnie has been a perfect addition to our family and we all just love her so much already.

I want to go on Daddy's motorcycle but mommy wont let me. I am practicing for the doggy Olympics in dog paddle when it gets really hot I swim with my coach Mommy.

Hello everyone @ the Upper Credit Humane Society...

I just wanted to send you an update on Jesse (formerly your "Aspen"). Jesse has made my world a whole lot brighter and happier since he came to his new home & family!

We can't believe our luck at finding this wonderful, sweet boy!! He's just as you described him - a true people loving dog and a gentle soul. He's met everyone in the family and all our extended family, plus many of the people at work and around the town we live in.

He's settled in to life in the house and enjoys all the toys, especially tennis balls & squeaky toys, including his rubber chicken. He was a little unsure of his big comfy bed at first, but he has become quite used to it now and was spotted sleeping on his back with all four legs splayed -- now that's relaxed!!!

After the recent loss of one of the best dogs I ever raised, I was SO SAD but it was surely fate that I found this sweet soul because he has brought a smiles and lots of joy back into my life.

Thank you to everyone at the UCHS, especially Andrea, for all your great care and compassion to finding the right home for all your animals--Words cannot express how thankful I am to you for allowing me the privilege of having Jesse in my life. I will take the very best care of him and love him for the rest of his life.

Lorelei is fitting into our family extremely well. It is hard to believe she wasn't adopted sooner! It is obvious she has some issues with certain objects which seem to have some negative imprint on her psyche. These issues will be overcome through patient work and lots of love. We are already seeing signs of this happening! We have left her alone in the house a few times for short periods without incident.

From day one, when I open the front door, Lorelei waits for me to say, ok, to go outside and she walks at my side keeping stride with me when we go for walks around the property. Five laps of the front yard is one kilometer and she stays right by my side. Lorelei has slowly become more comfortable and relaxed each day inside our home as well as outside. Lorelei is very well trained. She went to chase a rabbit in the backyard and stopped and came to me when I called her off. Lorelei will lick our hand or face when she wants to go outside to urinate, etc. She is learning our routines and is happiest when we are all at home with her as a family.

We thank all of you folks at Upper Credit Humane Society for taking good care of Lorelei during her stay at your facility. The good folks you all have working and volunteering have done a great job with Lorelei which has made her transition into our home that much easier.

Serenity's Happy Ending

Well I finally got her home and she was AMAZING in the car. She sat in the back seat and did not try to crawl into the front. She did not whine, whimper or bark the whole way. When I got her home I brought her up to the apartment and it took her about 10 minutes to climb our 25-30 open stairs but once she got to the top she looked happy. The first time she walked in the door she was a little timid but then quickly got used to the apartment. I took her for a walk up the street till the sidewalk ended then back, she was startled by a horse and buggy but made it ok. She eliminated a couple of minutes later, it was loose and slightly gooey (I attributed that to the days stress). When we got back to the apartment she walked around up and down the hall but always came back to me. She went to chew on my seaweed basket then the coffee table so I gave her a slice of bone and marrow (from the butcher shop and did she ever enjoy that!!). I took her out every hour and she went pee two of those times. She was quite shy with Michael at first and sulked for the hour I was away at the grocery store. She follows me on my heels. She would not eat her dinner unless I was right there but she will go and have a drink on her own. Around 9 we

took her for a walk around the block to get her to “go” b/c she had wicked bad gas. We were out for 40 mins. She is very good on the lead and I am getting her to ‘sit’ before we cross a road. She did not like the crate at first, she cried and whine for the first 2-3 hours but did finally fall asleep. We tried leaving her in the livingroom as per my gf’s suggestion but we moved her into the bedroom hoping she’d calm down faster and not keep our one neighbor up (in the event his bedroom was near ours).

I woke up about 650 took her outside and she did BOTH outside, peed within 5-10 steps of being down the stairs and she pooped after we circled the yard. She already knows where we walk in the yard, which is good to establish where her ‘safe’ boundary is.

I’m not sure if someone was working with her on this but she seems to have already almost perfected “sit”. I ask her to sit when I put her martingale collar on, take it off, a treat (she got for having a perfect night bathroom wise after she went outside), and to cross streets.

She does not yet seem to have interest in the ferrets, she did sniff their cage so the next adventure will be having her leashed up on the couch (b/c they can get at her we want to be able to control their approach to her) while they have their free run today.

Subject: Update on Serenity

Well today is the day in October that we chose for her birthday as we were told she was born sometime in October. She has really come into her own and enjoys playing with her older brothers and sister (the ferrets). Although we are still working through her issues with Michael (she still insists on barking at him when he gets up from the couch, comes home from work and sometimes when he comes into the bedroom at night), she has become a very good companion.

She enjoys walks, the dog park, and car rides, especially car rides. She has found a certain tone of squeaker toy that she enjoys squeaking and the tells us when she does not like a toy by tearing it to shreds leaving a wake of stuffing up and down the hallway.

She still spends her days in the crate while I’m at school (as we almost have house training down and are working on leaving things she should not touch alone) and gets excited when Michael beats me home as he gets to play the hero and give him lots of licks (I’m pretty sure he spoils her with the odd cheese slice here and there).

She gets a fresh bone every 2 weeks or so from the butcher shop 4 doors down and she sits very patiently outside the door and waits for me to come out with it because she knows that there is usually something in the bag for her.

She is such a shutter bug. She will not allow me to take other pictures when she is around unless I take a few of her while I’m taking photos.

Serenity spent her summer moving back and forth from Heidelberg to Alliston as I had to go back up north to work for the summer so we came home on weekends. She did very well with that kind of stressful situation and got to spent a lot of time with her best friend Kosha.

She has become such a wonderful companion and we would not have traded her for anything in the world. Thank you so much for rescuing her and allowing us to give her such a great home.

Max's Happy Ending

Hi Everyone,

We just wanted to send you an update on Max :) Our apologies, the most recent photo we have on our camera is this one, the rest are on our cell phones. We promise to take more on our camera and we'll send them along.
He is doing very well!! When he was at the vet in October/09, he weighed 17.5 lbs. His leg is healing great!
He wasn't into toys when we first brought him home, but within a month he became attached to a stuffed monkey and duck, which he now chases and shakes around when he's excited. He has claimed one of our chairs in the living room, so when we don't have company over we lay a padding and blanket down for him, and then he buries himself underneath it.

He loves his walks around the park and gets along well with everyone. Still not friendly with children so we of course avoid any contact. Max has a bestfriend names Gizmo, who is Gary's parents' chihuahua. He loves to get Gizmo chasing after him, it's so cute!
He still of course wins the hearts of everyones he meets, whether it's company or the people at the vet and we absolutely love him to bits!!! We are so thankful to have him! We will send more pics soon :)

Monty's Happy Ending

To all staff at the Upper Credit Humane Society,

We wanted to update you on Monty (a.k.a. Casper). We were so lucky to adopt Monty in February. He settled in immediately and has become a very loved member of our family. The girls just adore him and find it hard to be away from him for any time. He is extremely intelligent and affectionate and has definitely inherited the best of both breeds (greyhound and lab), he learns quickly and is so eager to please. He loves his walks and chasing the ball..and sometimes he even brings it back! He is addicted to sticks and anything that resembles a stick!

We thank all the staff at the UCHS and especially Monty’s foster mom who must have given him so much love and stability in his early days. Our lives have been enriched with this loveable guy and we can’t imagine life without him. Here are a few pictures of the first few days and more recently from Easter weekend with Grandma’s rake!

Tony's Happy Ending

It has only been a short while, but we wanted to let you know how well Tony (7 month old brown tabby cat) is fitting into our family.

When we first brought Tony home our 5 year old cat Fletcher, who has been the only pet for the past 3 years, didn't take very kindly to sharing his space. He did some occasional hissing at Tony and followed him around making sure he didn't do something he wasn't supposed to, but Tony didn't seem to notice as he was too busy exploring his new home. Day by day Fletcher realized that Tony was here to stay and accepted that fact, and now they are best buddies. They play, curl up together on the sofa, and even groom each other on occasion.

Even though he has his own toys, Tony has laid claim to a whistle attached to a cord that belongs to our daughter and drags it around the house. He loves it when one of us pulls it around the house so he can chase it, and much to our amazement, he can be in another room and when our daughter blows that whistle Tony comes running!!!

Tony has been a welcome addition to our family and is settling in very nicely.

Candy's Happy Ending

Hi, Just wanted to let you know that Candy is settling into our home very well ! My children have nicknamed her Candy Cane Cat.

The first couple of days, Amos, our 14 year old grey tabby would go up to her and smell her and she would hiss at him and smack him on the head, but yesterday and today they've been sitting together and looking out the window together. Amos even let Candy play with his tail one day. Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night to find them both sleeping with my husband and I on our bed. And this morning Candy woke us up by only licking our chins and ears
which is better than when Amos was her age as he would lick my eyelids
and bite my hair to wake me up.

A few moments ago I found both of them sitting on my kitchen counter watching the birds at the bird feeder. Amos hasn't jumped on our kitchen counter for years, but I am sure he thought, "hey, Candy is doing it, so why not?" haha

We are so happy that both cats are getting along and that Candy seems really happy here. Her kitten energy has even exceeded the kids' energy. :-)

Bailey's (formerly "Rye") Happy Ending

Dear Andrea,

We want to express a special "Thanks" to you and all the volunteers at the Upper Credit Humane Society for looking after "Rye" (renamed to "Bailey" in the meantime) while she was in your care. She has now been part of our family since February 8, 2010 and has adapted to her new surroundings better than we had hoped for. The information kit and advice you gave us were very useful to help integrate her successfully and were much appreciated.

Bailey is an absolute pleasure to have around. She is about one year old, very relaxed and quiet, eager to learn and is already housebroken. By now she knows all the commands like "heel", "sit", "stay", "down", "come". We even got her to "stay" when we put a dog treat right in front of her and walk some distance away. She will only take the treat after we tell her "go". For the whole time since we got her she only barked once and only because she was frustrated with us at one point. Her home is in the laundry room and we can leave the clothes and shoes there since she will not touch them. No crate is necessary since she goes there by herself when she wants to rest. She enjoys travelling in the car and remains calm so it was not necessary to provide a barrier behind the seat. Attached are some photos we took two weeks ago.
We just love this dog and cannot comprehend how anyone could have abandoned her in -10 degrees temperature.

Hank's Happy Ending

Hi there. Just thought I'd drop you a line about Hank. The car ride home was uneventful - just lots of kisses! Sam & Alex were in the back seat with Hank and Magnum rode up front with me. Our old dog was extremely unimpressed with us and a little insecure. Fast forward to our arrival home... the difference in both dogs here was at the same time amazing & expected. Magnum was now on his home turf, thus not as submissive, and Hank was, for the most part a goofy gentleman. Magnum had to assert himself a couple times but only with a slight growl. We played with Hank for about 3 hours - trying to wear him out & getting Magnum to show him the ropes of dog etiquette. They slept in the shop together without incident. This morning acouple of Sam's farming friends were around and Hank was nothing but his big, klutzy, loving self. Alex's has got him out for a walk and to play as I write this - all is well! You won't be getting him back! And I say that with the utmost respect! Thanks again for everything. Feel free to come and visit Hank. Patty

Sebring's Happy Ending

Hi there.

It has been 7 months since I adopted Sebring. When I spoke to Barb about adopting, and that my prospective friend would be traveling with me all over North America, Barb was optimistic. I have to say that Sebring has turned out to fantastic, and I think she truly loves her little home with me when we're out on the road. She gets along great with her new friends Yao and Libby, my sisters two Devon Rex cats. I read about Tonka and being rolled over on. I think Tonka and Sebring are siblings if I'm not mistaken. They must be because Sebring does the same thing! She makes it very apparent when its food time, twice a day and she won't let me forget. She loves wiffle balls, and tin foil balls, chasing them all over the truck. Sebring garners a lot of attention from passers by, as she sleeps in the sun on the dash board when we're stopped. And is my morning alarm clock, no snooze button on her that's for sure!
So again I thank Barb and everything you guys do for the animals in your care. I have passed my experience along to many different people along the roads I travel when asked. I knew it was a good idea when I had it. And Sebring has confirmed it as well.

Winnie's Happy Ending

Hi Everyone,

Sorry, it's taken so long to write you and let you know how "Winter" now named "Winnie" is doing. We absolutely love her to pieces and really can't believe she came into the shelter as a stray. She has an amazing temperament, and is a very sweet natured cat. She's not really a lap cat, but always wants to be close by. Our Yorkie has taken to her and they are now friends, although our resident cat still doesn't "love" her just yet, but is slowly coming to the realization that she now has a roommate.

Thank you for allowing her to come home with me, we'd be lost without her. And, thank you for giving "Winnie" a 2nd chance to find her forever home. Keep up the good work!

Peanut's Happy Ending

Hello,
My boyfriend and I adopted Peanut back in August. She is loving her new home, with her sister Molley (pug) and brother Jinx (bangle/ragdoll mix). They love to chase each other around the house and get into trouble. She loves to be cuddled and purr's up a storm.

Her 'mommy' and 'daddy' love her to pieces and are very happy they chose her to join their family.

Kara's Happy Ending

Hello everyone. we adopted Kara from the shelter in June and we just wanted to say how happy we are that she was able to come home with us. Kara has been doing very well, and is a stickler for routine, every morning at 630, we are awake and breakfast is served and we walk. Kara is an amazing listener (when she wants to) and loves going out for walks and to get the mail. Kara loves the dog park and really gives the other dogs a good running around.

We were told huskies were not really cuddly and dependent on attention, but she loves cuddleing and follows Dave pretty much everywhere. she has also discovered that if she sits on the middles steps of the staircase she can look out the window and give whoever is leaving our house sad puppy eyes.

Kara was having some nesting problems when she first left the centre, she didnt want to come out of her kennel for about 2 whole days when she came home, except for bathroom breaks. but after about a week, she began to feel more comfortable with us and started coming out with her squeaky toy in mouth. She has almost completely stopped using her squeaky toy that she permenently borrowed from the humane society, and now enjoys going to the dog store and finding new toys to destroy.

Libby's Happy Ending

Hi Andrea, and the rest of the Upper Credit staff who made it possible for Libby to join our home….

We adopted Libby at the end of January this year, and were not quite sure what we had taken on. She approached all aspects of life with such vigor and enthusiasm, which while admirable, sometimes had unexpected results.

She has settled into life in our home beautifully. Her dog friends Molson & Parker (also “gently used” yellow labs who found their forever homes with us) accept her willingly and patiently.

My children delight in all of her antics, the most notable of which is her swimming prowess. She spent every weekend of the summer plus some extended weeks at our cottage on Georgian Bay, and her passion for swimming is relentless. She will wake up in the morning, fetch her boat bumper and pester whoever is closest to throw the bumper into the lake. This game continues all day long, and a pink Frisbee is her other toy of choice.

We are so glad that we “took a chance” on wild little Libby (who completely destroyed the lovely dog bed we had put in the back of the car for her ride to her new home) – we can’t imagine what life was like without her.

Hi everyone!

I thought it was about time for me to send a happy endings letter myself, seeing as I do have 4 UCHS alumni in my family.

As you can see from the pictures, Mess and Tonka, the first two UCHS animals to be adopted into our household and the felines that rule the roost, are fit and fabulous. They love each other and they love our newest member, Buddy. Mess and Obi haven't quite figured out their relationship yet but lately it's been one of quiet indifference and Tonka finds great pleasure in playing his surprise attack game with Obi. The cats have become master cat burglars, breaking into just about any closed door or cupboard. Mess particularly enjoys finding the paper towel and then shredding it into a snowy mess. We have attempted to put them on a feeding schedule rather than being free-fed, but they have thwarted this plan several times, first by ripping open their hidden bag of food (see earlier cat burglar comments) and then by threatening to trip me while walking down the stairs if I do not fill up their food bowl. Tonka's greatest pleasure in life is snuggling between mom and dad at night and having dad roll over on top of him. You haven't heard purring until you've seen a squashed Tonka. Mess and Tonka have come a long way from being abandoned in a car and a dumpster in mid winter respectively.

Obi, the first UCHS dog we added to our pack has been nothing but trouble since day one. The Labrador star of Marley and Me has nothing on my Obes. Although we are long past the days of destructive separation-anxiety (we replaced door handles, door trim, mattresses, cat beds, two wire crates and curtains just to name a few items), he is still endlessly energetic with the attitude of a spoiled child. We recently moved from a home outside of Guelph where Obi had to say goodbye to his good friend and neighbour Rex (and Rex a very relieved good-riddance to Obi) to an apartment inside the city limits and, in truth, I think this is the best place for him yet. We go out for a 45 minute walk on a nearby trail in the morning, a half hour brisk walk around the neighbourhood at lunch and an hour long evening stroll after dinner. As I type, he is briefly tired out and sleeping peacefully at my feet with his canine sister. Now don't get me wrong, he is a wonderful, free-spirited, youthful, joyful and sweet-hearted dog. I just keep waiting for age to come along and help me settle the brute down. As I have said many times, dogs are either born with looks or personality and Obi is VERY handsome.

Finally there is my Buddy girl. My nine year old final addition to my current family is as perfect today as she was when she was "just a foster dog". Buddy loves people, dogs, catsand even the pesky squirrels that cause her brother to "wig out" during out walks. Although she is around ninety pounds, our sweet girl has never outgrown her desire to snuggle up in our laps. Her medical problems keep mounting but thankfully, with my job at a vet clinic, we are able to keep on top of the latest tests and treatments available. Despite her chronic ACL tear, her arthritis, her thyroid and skin problems, Buddy never has a down day and is a soft and sensitive dog. She hates the cold and the rain but loves dressing up and has a small collection of sweaters and jackets to ward off the elements. She also hates her muzzle which she now has to wear since we moved but I ordered a custom made, soft leather, hot pink one online that should be arriving soon. No one said the B.S.(L) law couldn't be fashionable.

Oscar's Happy Ending

Ticker is no longer ticked off…he is now Oscar

Hello everyone!

It's been approximately a week and a half since I adopted Ticker and I am pleased to say that he has settled in extremely well! He has been renamed Oscar and is making friends with Gerrard - a three year old beige tabby, Callie - a red Australian Cattle Dog from Upper Credit Humane in 2008 and Bill - a blue Australian Cattle Dog cross from Meet The Pack Rescue in 2009.

I had some minor concerns about how well Oscar would adjust to two dogs since nobody knew if he liked dogs. Callie and Bill are curious about him but his attitude is "talk to the paw" when it comes to them. He struts through the house (literally struts - as if he owns it!) and is very relaxed. His favourite place to be is on the dryer where he has a view of the yard and garden and is out of sniffing range of the dogs! He has his beloved Mr. Pig with him there on his new bed where he enjoys his alone time . Oscar is very social and enjoys laying on the couch, especially when I am working on the quilt (see photo). With lots of big sunny windows to lay in and toys to play with, he's a happy (constantly purring!) dude. He and Gerrard had a few little hissing incidents the first and second days and that was it. They're not best buddies yet but I can see it coming soon!

Thanks again to all the staff who spent the time to talk with me about the personalities of the different cats and assisting me in choosing one who would be a good fit in our home.

Callie's Happy Ending

Back in January 2008 I adopted Callie the Australian Cattle Dog that nobody seemed to want. I saw her picture one day while considering adopting another Australian Cattle Dog. When I read her story I knew I had to meet her. It seemed as though she was a misunderstood Cattle Dog and some of her
"problem" behaviours were nothing more than frustrated Cattle Dog antics. I visited her a few times and made the decision to give her a chance - I'm glad I did!

At the time of Callie's adoption, I had a purebred Cattle Dog named Cairo who was six years old and became Callie's new play, hiking and camping companion. In addition, I also have a cat named Gerrard. Six and a half months after adopting Callie, Cairo was diagnosed with cancer and died a few weeks later. Callie was a huge help to me in the following weeks as I dealt with (and still am dealing with) Cairo's death.

Callie came to me with a history of being a soccer ball and frisbee athlete/fanatic. I am pleased to say that both of those sports are still a huge part of her life. Now she is also a camper and hiker who loves the great outdoors. Every car ride is a potential adventure to her.

As for her "problem" behaviours...she occasionally still grabs at ankles and pant legs when overly excited, but only if there isn't a toy close by to grab instead! None of her other problems were evident after adoption. Again, I think that she was just acting out some of her frustrations. She consistently displays her Cattle Dog smarts and quickly learns commands and as is typical of the breed, will show attitude as well!

Callie has a stuffed soccer ball in the house and three outside ones and an outdoor frisbee that she cannot get enough of. In the hot weather, when it's too hot to walk or hike, I fill up the pool for her and she has a pool party, which is actually her splashing most of the water out of the pool!

Callie now has a new "brother"...a Cattle Dog mix named Bill who is approximately two years old. He is originally from North Carolina and was transferred to a Cattle Dog rescue here in Ontario. His personality is submissive which is a perfect match for Callie's dominant attitude. They are best buddies and she has helped him adjust to life in a house after being a stray. The two of them get along with Gerrard the cat and are adjusting to our new addition from Upper Credit Humane Society - Ticker the cat. (more about him another time)

The attached photo is from our trip to North Carolina/Tennessee/Georgia to meet the people who originally rescued Bill and arranged for health care and transfer to Ontario. Callie and Bill both enjoyed the mountains!

Scooby's Happy Ending

Hi Guys!

Just wanted to send along a pic of the new "Cleaner" version of Scooby (left) LOL, and his little sister Meika! They are getting along famously, and he settled right in here. He has yet to make even a peep at any of the boarders and has chosen one of the barn cats as his new buddy! Perhaps the grumblies were a symptom of being at the shelter? Either way, he is being a big, cuddly, wonderful boy!

All in all things are wonderful so far...we love him to bit!

Genevieve's Happy Ending

Hello everyone,

Genevieve a.k.a. Optic has been with our family for almost two years. My husband Ray adopted her as a gift to me for my birthday. We came into the Erin Humane Society location to donate money for the cost of the surgery to save Genie's left eye after she nearly lost it in a shooting accident.

We fell immediately in love with the cat that no one else would adopt because she was "broken".

Genie was quiet and friendly in her adopted home at the Humane Society. She gave no hint of the character she really is, nor of her incredible personality. Genie is VERY talkative and lovingly demanding. She will occasionally go on a day long "hunger strike" if she feels that she is due wet cat food rather then her usual menu of Whiska's Meaty Dry Formula. Genie enjoys being cuddled on your left shoulder, pressed up close to your head, just in reach for her to wash your ear and neck. She really loves a good "fight" every morning to exercise her nibbling abilities - which is the only exercise Genie wishes to participate in. We have purchased many different cat toys for her, trying to peak her interest and get her moving around a bit more. Genie looks at them with utter disdain. She will only play with a toy if there is one of our kids at the other end of it moving it around for her.

Here are some pictures of our lazy, wonderful, loving tub of lard for your enjoyment. Thank you for taking such good care of her while she waited for her new home and family.

CJ's Happy Ending

My family adopted CJ the bouvier last January and saw that the happy endings was back up and running, so here is his...

Although he is 9years old now he is still very young at heart. It did take him time to get settled in to his new family- but he is now over the anxieties he initially had. He enjoys going to the barn where he runs around for hours and goes on hacks with the horses and most of all rolls in all thewonderful smells of a horse farm. Last summer he did agility classes which he was very good at and seemed to enjoy the confidence building! Since we adopted CJ we have also gotten two other family members- Parker a bouvier and Finnegan a dachshund. He has learned how to play since having them, as we don't think he knew how to play prior. We are very thankful to have him in our family!! He is such a wonderful cuddly guy!! Thanks for everything you did for him :)

Hi Andrea,

We held my daughter's 9th Birthday Party. recently at the Hillsburgh arena where We had most of my daughter's class come to help celebrate - Olympic's style - and my daughter asked the kids in liu of presents to bring donations to the Upper Credit Humane Society.

Last week-end we dropped everything off to the shelter which totalled $300.00 plus food/litter/detergent etc....
During the party the kids skated, then went upstairs and in teams competed in Olympic games. Fun was had by all, but we want to Thank all the kids & their families for such generous donations. I have attached some pics from the party, and was wondering if you would be able to post them with a Big Thank You! out to the kids:

Tye's Happy Ending

We adopted Tye last October during the "Come and Pet the Cats". Tye is very timid but has
got used to the 3 dogs Zach, Jennie, & Brie.
He will avoid them if he can. He gets on
well with Lizzie, who we adopted from the
Orangeville Humane Society, last August.

Tye likes to sleep in his little tent and sometimes Lizzie sleeps with him. He comes when I shake the bag of kitty treats each night. He loves drinking from my flowers, and he loves eating too. He has put on weight, the only problem we have
is that he will not cuddle up with us or let us carry him.

I guess that will come it time.

Lucy's Happy Ending

I just wanted to thank all of the volunteers at the Upper Credit Society for caring for Lucy during those long 8 months that she was with you. I adopted her on November 25 2009, at the age of 10 years 11 months.

It was obvious within the first hour of bringing her home that she was overjoyed at being in a for ever home again, she just didn't stop purring. No longer is her favourite past time sleeping, but she has her own toys she enjoys playing with, takes a great interest in sitting by the window looking out at the birds, and even enjoys friendly playtime with my other cat Carl..

I wanted to share a couple of pictures with you, one of Lucy playing near the Christmas tree with her favourite toy, and lying on the bed with her new feline buddy Carl.

So again, THANK YOU to all the volunteers for keeping Lucy safe for me, she has certainly brightened up our lives.

Gibson - Wilson (Little guy)

Hello,

I wanted to write you this email regarding our recent experience adopting Gibson (aka Wilson, aka Little Guy) from the Upper Credit Humane Society.

Everyone at the shelter was very friendly and knowledgeable about the animals being cared for and very open to answering questions and offering information about each animal.

We adopted Gibson and love him very much. We had to be sure to adopt the right dog for our family as we have a 1 year old son and needed to be sure the pet we brought home would be tolerant to a toddler and friendly. We were able to meet with Gibson twice before deciding to put in an application for adoption. We did our research and knew the pros and cons of adopting a beagle. We spoke with Karen a lot and she offered lots of information regarding Gibson and what she knew about the breed. We also got to speak with the person who fostered him for a few weeks just before he came to live at the shelter. We knew that Gibson was the right fit for us.

We were very impressed that everyone took the time to answer our questions and provide us with as much information as possible about Gibson. We were interviewed over the phone by Andrea and she asked very thorough questions regarding our idea of what our pet could offer our family and what we could offer our new pet. Her questions were great because they made you think about things that are often overlooked when getting involved in the excitement of pet adoption. It's very easy to forget the reality and responsibility of having a new family member.

We were very thankful that everyone at Upper Credit Humane Society had the animals best interest at heart and that although their adoption process was longer, it was to ensure the right match was made for the family and the animal. We're confident that we got exactly the right dog and that he got exactly the right 'forever family' and we truly believe it is because of this process.

Gibson has 4 long walks a day, and 2 smaller walks. He's very good with the employee in the downstairs office. He has a favorite blanket in front of both fireplaces and a plush (once stuffed) rabbit that has been quite decimated, that he loves to bits.

He barks only once a day, when the neighbor walks his dog in front of our house and he absolutely loves our 1 year old and can be found cuddling with him often. They are sure to be best pals for a long time.

If it's alright, we would like to drop you a line from time to time and let you know how our family is doing and the fun, loving, lifestyle that Gibson now enjoys.

Hello to all at the Upper Credit,

We just wanted to update you on Dutch’s (aka Pearson) progress and send along a couple of pictures for you guys to see how well he is doing. Although we have only had him since the end of August, it feels like he has always been a part of our family. He settled in really well and he always impresses new people that he encounters with his calm and friendly demeanor. He just loves his new neighborhood and all of the new dogs and people he sees on his walks although he still hasn’t gotten used to the horses. He most definitely is a very important member of our family and we let him know on a daily basis how special he is to us.

Thanks to all of you for taking such good care of him before he came to us and for all that you do for the animals in your care! You’re a great bunch of people.

Hello all,

We are coming up to a year at the end of August since adopting Dutch aka Pearson and he is doing really well. He is an amazingly smart dog who has fit right in to the family and we couldn't love him more. Dutch is such an adaptable dog and just became the "guardian" of two adopted horses.He seems to have taken on the responsibility of watching over them and it's just priceless to see the interaction between them all. I just wanted to update you all as to Dutch's current life and to let you all know that he's doing really well and is very happy. His runner days are definitely over, he is always at our side.

Hello! It's been just over a week since we adopted Dutch and I thought I'd send you an update. We are in love with our new baby! She's SUCH a good dog, she's sweet and gentle, she doesn't get into anything and we haven't had to crate her at all. She has the run of the house but normally goes everywhere with us. She is a dream dog, the lady who owned her previously must have put a lot of love and work into bringing her up so well. At first she was walking around in circles, not sure what to do with her self but she's settled in nicely. I took the week off work to be with her, today is my first day back at work and I hate being away from her! Everyone who meets her can't believe she came from a shelter, I think we've made some people think about adopting. She's such a good little embassador!

Suki's Happy Ending

I wanted to send an e-mail to everyone, to give you an update about Suki the Siamese cat that I adopted about two weeks ago.
He loves his new home, and he's fitting in perfectly with the new animals. Him and my Puppy Pal are getting along wonderfully, and they treat each other like brothers, even sleeping together during the night.
He's loving life, and I'm so happy he's here.

Georgina's Happy Ending

As you all know Georgina was at the shelter for a long time. I had no intentions of adding another cat to my 5 at home already but I could see this senior cat was losing faith...She's been with us for 2 years and is much loved. She has a regal air about her and she deserves to . Georgia has recently been operated on and diagnosed with the most aggressive cancer but apparently she doesn't know that because she is still active and continues to eat like a horse....

She has us wrapped around her fingers ..

Sage & Sachem's Happy Ending

Hello Everyone,

We just wanted to give you an update on Sage and Sachem as they are doing great! They completely feel like they are part of the family. We have not put up a fence as the dogs don't run from us. They have ran off twice in 5 months b/c of chasing something, but I think we keep them pretty much entertained and exercised that they just hang out on the porch on the front lawn with us. We don't even need leashes unless we take them off the property and down the country roads.

Sage is a little traveler that likes to sit under the tires on my truck until I take him to work and he goes nuts when he gets his daily car ride. My husband has to run up the stairs and dive into bed before sachem so that there is room for him...LOL.

Half of sages face was paralyzed about a month after we got him, and we thought he had a stroke. The VET said it was no stroke and he has a thyroid disorder which we give him pills and eye drops as his eye was having problems blinking. The issue is starting to resolve itself and he is doing much better with the pills.

Anyway, here are some recent pictures of them so you can see how well they are doing! I still can't believe no one wanted these dogs.... They are Wonderful!

Star's Happy Ending

Good morning Andrea et al,
A quick note to let you know how happy we and Star are!!! She is the GREATEST dog. Star knows her name very well, comes, sits, lays down, loves to play fetch and adores Cassie and Jessie. She loves to go to the barn and help with the horses. She is soooo smart and obedient. It is lovely to see her going out to the pasture to see the horses, Her lovely tail up and wagging constantly. She's wonderful in the house, Must of had a home as the first thing she did after getting here was get up on the couch!! (That ended quickly!) She's getting used to all the cats, Still thinks there for playing with sometimes. The cats are getting her straight. One is already rubbing up against her! She's very quiet, Dosn't bar unnecessarily but lets us know if someone arrives. We've left her alone for short periods up to 2 hours and she's just fine. We made sure she had her own bed (blanket) and a toy, "hedgie" the little hedgehog she chose in the store. She even knows hedgies name and goes and gets it when asked. She has a beautiful smile! The sore on her back is healed. I used Proviodine solution and it worked great. Her incision is also healed. I really can't say enough about star!! She is the most wonderful companion to us all!!! Thank you very much for choosing us!!!!!!! Will send photos soon.

Spike's Happy Ending

Hi Everyone,

We are so happy that Spike has come to live with us. We have had a very empty home since having lost our cat two years ago and our dog last fall. It seems that we spent a long time looking for the right cat. We must have been just

waiting for Spike. One look at his picture on the website and it was a match made in heaven. Once we made our visit to your shelter and were able to spend a little time with your resident cats we knew that Spike was the one for us.

Spike was a little wary when we first brought him home but it didn't take long for him to adjust to his new surroundings. He is quite a character and very playful. Spike loves his toys and especially the ball. He thinks that he is a retriever because he chases the ball and then returns it to you to throw again. He continues to do this until he tires of the game and reverts to being a cat. Spike is not one who likes to be held. He doesn't mind being cuddled for a moment but he does really enjoy being close to us. No matter where we are in the house he follows and stays by our side.

Thanks so much for the job you do at the shelter. Spike was a happy, well adjusted cat from the moment he arrived. Keep up the good work.
